From Rags to Riches, or From Rice to Race

Posted in Rants / Emo-isms on July 23, 2009 by Dom

I think we’ve all seen it. A “fixed-up” car or two parked in some public lot with a bunch of guys standing around talking about car parts. I don’t know about you, but that imagery annoys me. And thus, I do everything in my power to try and avoid being a part of it. Being a “car guy” carries a certain stigma in my opinion. Or at least it does when it’s Japanese cars. You sort of expect guys to be standing around a GT3RS or a F430, whereas when you see guys standing around a G35 or a S2000, you can’t help but immediately think “ricer.”

I got home from my bicycle ride yesterday evening to find 3 dudes standing in the middle of the street I live on, one guy’s G35 on one side and another guy’s Z33 on the other. As I rode past, I overheard the following part of their conversation:

“I’ve been in a car with nitrous before. It’s like a switch and then it only comes on at full throttle.”
“Whoa. So you mean it’s not like it is in the movie?”
“No. That’s actually the really unsafe way to do it.”

I thought to myself, “Wow. Really?” So you mean it’s not like it is in the movie. Seriously? I immediately planned on sharing this with you folk, but then I contemplated what I just experienced a bit further and I remembered something I found amusing. I realized that I too had that same conversation with someone and was just as naive, albeit I was 17 at the time. But remembering that moment made me realize that I wanted to share how much of a ricer I was before. I was into the red Acura emblems, the air fresheners, the “hyper-white” bulbs, and RO_JA wheels (sorry arj). I literally had blue Street Glow neonsĀ on my car. It was SO bad that the bulbs weren’t even really hidden. You could see the bulbs screwed into the bottom of my sideskirts when looking at the side of my Integra. I wanted the AEM brake kit, had the AEM CAI V2, and to this day still have DC headers on my car. It’s the occasional reminder of “the dark era” in my life whenever I change my oil.

My point in mentioning this to all of you is this: Almost everyone starts out as a ricer, but that ricer has the potential to become someone extremely knowledgeable or even influential in this microcosm we call the “import industry.” All they have to do is be open to truly learning about the quality product that is out there. When I say truly learning, I’m talking about really understanding how a particular product works, not just its existence. On the same token, that ricer can also forever stay as they are and subsequently be the source of disdain for everyone else in the know.

It is my hope, dream even, that this blog and others like it will encourage, inspire and aid people to elevate and improve themselves with greater knowledge and its proper application. It is not enough to simply say that “product-X is the shit because it’s JDM,” because then you get people like this who don’t fully understand the message we’re trying to send. I believe that we have a duty to help others, and if you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem. Change the lives of ricers for the better. Truly educate and empower.

Edit:
It seems as though I’ve offended a “seibon supporter”

Been a while, but I know some of you guys will enjoy this

There was a moving sale for AME last month. Posted on a bunch of forums and stuff. Here’s a phone call conversation I had about 20 minutes ago:

Me: Endless USA
Caller: Yeah, you guys are having a blow-out sale?
Me: A what?
Caller: A blow-out sale. It says from June 14th to June 19th?
Me: Uh.. June 14th to June 19th?
Caller: Yeah.
Me: Mm.. It’s July bro.
Caller: Oh, haha. That’s right huh?
Me: Yeah……
Caller: Haha, alright den. Thanks.

D.O.M.: Upsetting Drifters, One Fanboy At A Time

Posted in Rants / Emo-isms on May 21, 2009 by Dom

Why do “drifters” ask for sponsorships from Endless? Or from any brake company for that matter? Has any drifter out there ever experienced any brake fade or vapor lock? I’m honestly curious to know.

How important are brake systems on drift cars really? Because as far as I’m concerned, drifters can get away with the stock system. Maybe, just MAYBE could some upgraded pads be warranted, but even then they pads have to exhibit extremely low levels of friction or else it’s counterproductive.

Blah. I wish these guys would just stop. A drifter asking me for sponsorship is sorta like an atheist asking you where the nearest confessional is. It just doesn’t make any sense.

Sigh.

Whoever’s this is, I’m disappointed.

1. A C-West GT-Type widebody kit with APR splitter, side mirrors and wing? That’s like wearing an Armani suit with an Alfani tie..

2. Is it me, or is the “front splitter” not wide enough for the car?

3. Um, the canards are nearly horizontal..

4. The C-West GT-Type widebody kit was designed for downforce, which is kind of useless with stretched tires.

5. Holy-ugly-wheels, Batman!

6. Angel, I sincerely hope this isn’t your car. I’d be especially disappointed since I’ve given you advice about the project before and could have even sold you a set of Craft Squares.

I was complaining about this to Logan, to which he said things like, “Bro, I don’t think this guy is doing any canard requiring driving.” But honestly..?

If you’re going to do something, do it right.

Another Subtle Life Reference From Car Culture?

Have you ever been to a fancy restaurant where in between courses the waiter will come by and clean crumbs off your tablecloth with that little scraper thing?

That’s what I was reminded of when I saw this pic:

What do you think? #10 on the list?

WTF.

Either there’s a trend of fanboys out there painting their TE’s green or these are the VERY ones that have been irritating the shit out of me as I spot them around Irvine.

Stuff like this was cool FIVE years ago when Jay did it to his CE’s on the wagon. But now…

Seriously, grow up people. You kids probably think audaciously colored all-over-print clothing is cool too, huh?

kimihat

Who the hell told you that an oversized hat with a flat bill looks good?

We all know you’re the rebellious one, and I respect that, but honestly dude.. Don’t dirty the Ferrari image by wearing your hat that way. You DON’T want to start resembling shit like this:

Wait, wait, wait – let me explain

seibon

First things first, I DON’T look at SpeedCunters. That would be a waste of time. Why? Because it’s owned by an entity which hopes to “increase its legitimacy” by paying people to blog/take pictures for them. They say it’s for the love of motorsports and all-things-cars when really it’s about ultimately increasing the money in their pockets.

But in any case, the picture above was first shown to me by Kent, and then by BH, and then by a whole list of other people. It’s a picture of the Endless Super Taikyu EVO and yes, that is a ginormous SEIBON sticker on it.

Yes, the same SEIBON that’s based out of Walnut, California.

Yes, the very same SEIBON that is incapable of producing anything original or of quality.

But I had no explanation for the presence of the sticker and, like you, I was upset. Luckily, someone from Endless Japan literally just got into town for this weekends ALMS race and I took the opportunity to ask him about it. So, if you’ll be so kind, I shall explain…

In Super Taikyu (the Japanese endurance race series for the noobs out there), the CT9A is still outperforming the CZ4A. This is, of course, not good for Mitsubishi nor Endless Japan since they campaign the CZ4A. One demerit to the CZ4A is that it weighs about 100kilos more than the CT9A. So when Rays, who is selling Seibon to the Japanese market, offered carbon doors to E. Japan for a stuuuuuuuuuuuuupid cheap price (hence the stupid huge sticker), E. Japan took it. Without so much as a peep from me, our guy from E. Japan then said the doors are poor quality and that they’d rather have dry carbon ones, but they’re just doors and they really had no other makers to choose from. Those doors are the only thing SEIBON on the car. The rest of the aero that actually matters is Ings.

So, there you have it. Pressure from Mitsubishi to get the EVO 10 performance above that of the EVO 8/9 and a stupid crazy cheap deal.

In the end, I blame the whole thing on Rays because it’s their fault for doing the whole “SEIBON TE37″ collabo and selling SEIBON in Japan. Just kidding. Well, maybe not..
