Speedhunters

Posted in Rants / Emo-isms on July 25, 2008 by Dom

Mr. Jay Bryan, you are my hero.

I didn’t have the balls to say it up until now, so I had settled for venting to Jay on my own, but seriously, what’s up with Speedhunters? Is Need For Speed trying to piece together legitimacy or do those NFS guys genuinely like cars? If it’s the latter, then why aren’t they the ones doing all the writing? I’d totally like to know what the real ulterior motive is behind that site. Because as it is, Speedhunters appears to exist / have been created for no apparent reason.

Sure Speedhunters has great photos and pretty extensive coverage, but I am NOT a fan. I do NOT read it regularly. In fact, the only thing I like on that site is this. What annoys me the most though (Jay agrees with me on this) is that Speedhunters killed some of our favorite blogs. The most depressing death to me is Auto Otaku. Mike, you gotta write for Auto Otaku more (or better yet, ONLY). Your blog remains on my blogroll even though the last update was back on June 5th. Your blog had real heart and soul.

I get it to a certain degree though. People create hype and get together, it creates something larger. But you know, when blogging becomes an obligation or a job, it’s no longer a blog. It’s just a poor excuse for journalism.

Comments are on, so if any of you guys wanna write some obscene rebuttals then feel free. Just remember that internal solidarity is a function of external threat.

Oh and it looks like Jay wasn’t finished.

This is for Kent

Some time ago, I wanna say around a year ago, Kent randomly asked me if I remembered “Scramble Boost.” I laughed at the question and said no, suspiciously asking him to explain.

Kent: “It’s this device that gives you a random about of boost so you can amuse the girl you’re trying to impress.”
Me: “What..?”
Kent: “Yeah, you’re driving along and you tell the girl, ‘Hey press this button and see what happens,’ and then you get crazy boost and she like screams and is all happy and stuff.”
Me: “Uh..”
Kent: “Dude, I’m serious. HKS made it.”
Me: “What? No…”
Kent: “I SWEAR. I’ll find it and show you.”

He never did, but eventually I got an EVC for the S15. Opened up the manual. Lo and behold; scramble boost. Jon Kuroyama eventually explained it’s actual purpose to me though:

“If you have a boost level that’s a little high for the tighter section of a track but can utilize higher boost for a long straight, then you can turn down boost and set the scramble for the long straight section. That way the car is easier to handle in the tighter sections but has extra power for when you have room to open up.”
